
This photograph was taken on December 5, 1997. The specifications are as follows: Olympus
OM-2 camera with ASA 400 Kodak Gold film, exposed for 1 second, 50mm lens set at f/2, and
the camera was mounted on a Bogen tripod. Alignments such as these are very rare, and we
won't see another one like it for at least 100 years. Also visible that night, but not in this picture,
were Saturn (beyond at upper left), and Mercury (already set). Also note that the Moon, although it was in the crescent phase that night,
is quite overexposed. This is almost impossible to avoid when one needs to utilize a longer exposure in order to bring
out the fainter objects. Also, it was quite chilly that evening, and I can honestly say that I was awed by the spectacle above me.
